“The employer wants to know whether you can recover if things break down,” Leech says. How do you manage communications with clients and coworkers when there’s a three-hour time difference? Do you have to coordinate live meetings across multiple time zones? How do you collaborate on projects and manage a crisis when everyone is scattered around the globe?

So virtual communication will be absolutely fundamental to you getting your job done. And you’ll be using all kinds of tools to communicate – email, online chat, video hangouts, project management software, etc. Writing is key when you are working remotely, you need to demonstrate that you understand this and have experience driving projects forward with writing. Some remote job interview questions may not make sense at the time, but they are geared toward finding people who can successfully handle the schedule, work environment, and workload of working from a home office.

As a remote employee, your disembodied, televised head is often floating out of eyeline, off in the background. As conversation picks up, it can be hard to get a word in edge-wise. If you wait for the perfect opportunity, you might never have a chance to speak. Similar to appreciating the company’s culture, it’s a good idea to mention how much you believe in the company’s mission. Maybe one of its goals is to always donate a percentage of its profits to a humanitarian cause.

I mentioned earlier that when I interviewed for my first fully-remote position, I tried to act like that wasn’t a factor in why I applied for the position.

To answer this question, you can go ahead with giving previous examples of how you learned new apps or tools quickly to accomplish some task. In a brick and mortar setting, you have the water cooler, the cafeteria, your colleagues work desk, and other places to talk with different people. You talk face to face and resolve any issues you may have with your coworker. You can’t meet the person face to face but you have your virtual communication tools to interact and talk it out. This answer helps the interviewer understand whether or not you’re okay with the lack of an in-office environment. The best way to answer this one is to talk about your self-driven nature and attitude.
